As a celebration of Rotary Queensland's Centenary, Rotary Queensland has committed to raising sufficient funding to establish a perpetual chair and research funding in Neuroscience at the University of Queensland Brain Institute.
Prof Graeme Nimmo RFD is patron of the Break Through Project.
It’s been an extraordinary few weeks for the Rotary Club of Brisbane. The Monthly Evening Social on 3 March at Friday’s Riverside was another great night—huge thanks to the Friday’s staff, who always make us feel welcome. Miss S Murphy bravely presented her EarlyAct proposal for Petrie Terrace State School. She was a little shy, but the team loved her idea and the effort made. We also welcomed Kelly Bartle from Port Moresby Rotary and Peter Pelapa, introduced by Dickson Ken. We’ll soon be sharing a story about Kelly Bartle’s insights into her club’s work in PNG and plans for collaboration.
At last week’s Club Lunch Meeting on 17 March, we heard from Emily Skilbeck, founder of REACH Siem Reap, and Sokun Song, REACH’s family assistance manager. It was Sokun’s first time speaking publicly, and she did a fantastic job sharing very openly and movingly about her life in Cambodia. Emily and Sokun were joined by Immediate Past District Governor Paul Roger and the always fabulous Sue Roger (in St Patrick's Day green), along with Ian Haylor, past president of Dalby Rotary and a REACH board member. REACH is doing incredible work breaking the cycle of poverty through education and family support. You can read more about their work at reachsiemreap.org. We’ll also be sharing more on how we can support REACH in the coming weeks—if anyone in the club fancies cycling, their Ride to REACH fundraiser might be calling your name: reachsiemreap.org/ride-to-reach.
Some great news—we have a stack of member applications to process at our upcoming board meeting. This is a huge positive step for the club.
I also want to acknowledge our members who haven’t been able to make it to meetings recently—we miss you and hope to see you soon.
This Monday’s meeting is set to be a good one. Our own member Celia Grenning is speaking, we’ve got guests registered who are interested in Rotary membership, Rotarians visiting from abroad and visitors from Briz Pride Rotary Club. If you’re coming along, the club needs some help with set-up and running the meeting. Please let me know if you can lend a hand.
Finally, thank you all. It’s been a wild ride lately, but the Rotary Club of Brisbane is in great shape, and that’s because of our amazing members. See you Monday.
The event will commence at 10:30am (registration from 10:00am) - lunch is complimentary - and concludes at 5:00pm. All guests are invited to stay for drinks & finger food 5:00pm - 6:00pm with cash bar to informally network with the Fellows and guests.

The Rotary Club of Brisbane is proud to announce the successful approval of a District Grant for the Teacher in a Box (TiB) program, bringing transformative educational opportunities to schools in Papua New Guinea (PNG). This funding will enable the purchase and distribution of nine TiB units, a significant step toward improving digital learning access in remote areas.
A special acknowledgment goes to Phil Saxby for his efforts in securing this funding. His commitment to this initiative, alongside RCoB member Dickson Ken, has ensured that students across PNG will benefit from educational resources previously out of reach. Phil also generously topped up the funding, allowing for the purchase of additional TiB units.
As Phil noted in his message to club members:
"I note with some delight that the RCoB District Grant application last year for TiB to be purchased and distributed into PNG schools through the expertise of RCoB member Dickson Ken has been successful in this round. Please support RCoB member Dickson Ken in his tireless endeavours to improve educational standards throughout PNG. Through RARE, Dickson has now shipped many containers of educational equipment throughout PNG, not just into his own Province. These TiB units will open exceptional educational opportunities previously not dreamt about in PNG."
Is Rotary truly inclusive? District 9620 is taking a big step forward by introducing the Kids & Carers Room at the conference! A huge credit to the District 9620 Conference Committee for recognising this need and making it happen. This space gives parents and carers a quiet place to feed a baby, take a break with little ones, or enjoy some activities—all while staying connected to the conference through a live audio-visual feed from the stage so they don’t miss a thing.
It may not be packed this year, but "if you build it, they will come." Rotary isn’t always easy for families, but with initiatives like this, it can be in the future.
⬅️ We need your help! Our club can support this great initiative by volunteering for a few hours to help host the room. It’s a simple but powerful way to serve our community and make Rotary more accessible. If you can lend a hand, let us know! Tap the Online Rego.
At a regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Brisbane last year, an unexpected but serendipitous encounter set the stage for international goodwill. Jon Lieberg, a visiting Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Temecula, California, happened to attend while Celia Grenning was giving an update on the Club’s long-standing support of the Kyeema Foundation and its work in Papua New Guinea (PNG). What followed is a testament to the enduring power of Rotary’s global network and the friendships it fosters. Fast forward a few months, and Jon’s casual visit turned into something far more meaningful.
Our club offers Family Memberships, making it easier and more affordable for spouses, partners, and adult children at home to join Rotary.
Similar to corporate memberships, a Family Membership allows a primary member to add one or more alternate members who can either attend in their place or come along to meetings and events. The second person gets 50% off membership fees.
We also offer a monthly payment option, making Rotary more accessible for those who prefer to spread out their dues.

2014 - In the Netherlands a friend of clothes designer Bas Timmer died of hypothermia.
Timmer set about designing an outfit that the homeless could wear/sleep in during the cold wet weather.
His design was called a Sheltersuit because it was a windproof padded jacket that could be transformed into a bodysuit by zipping a pair of trousers to the jacket (photo) and worn by the homeless living rough on the streets.
The design/product concept was quickly embraced and supported by major charitable organisations in the northern hemisphere including Rotary International
The Rotary Club of Brisbane is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Kevin Egu. Kevin was a passionate and dedicated coral gardener, committed to restoring Papua New Guinea’s reefs and protecting marine ecosystems. His work inspired those around him, and his legacy will live on in the communities and reefs he cared for so deeply.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
