As a celebration of Rotary Queensland's Centenary, Rotary Queensland has committed to raising sufficient funding to establish a perpetual chair and research funding in Neuroscience at the University of Queensland Brain Institute.
Prof Graeme Nimmo RFD is patron of the Break Through Project.
On 22 July 2024, Vice President Bruce McNaught opened the meeting with 17 in attendance. Immediately preceding this meeting was the Board Meeting where members smashed out 14 items for consideration across a 107 pages of Board Meeting Documents, and all within 60 minutes. PP Phil Saxby kept the time reminders flowing and President Angela Murphy cracked the whip, resulting in PP Mark Williams labelling her "A Beast" once all items had been moved as intended (a description she willingly accepted). A fitting start to the year!
Congratulations to Winnie Chen on her election to the board.

QBI Weekly Spot: Podcast: A neuroengineered future
In 2023, neuroengineer Dr Clarissa Whitmire joined the Queensland Brain Institute as a senior research fellow and is the Institute’s newest group leader. Originally from the United States, Clarissa arrived at UQ following a postdoctoral appointment at the Max Dellbruck Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin. In a joint appointment with UQ’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Clarissa seeks to combine her expertise in biomedical engineering with the next phase of neuroscience. Here at QBI, Dr Whitmire and her team are working to improve the human condition by developing tools and technologies to interface with our bodies. Neuroscientists call this technology Brain Computer Interfaces – devices that establish a direct connection between the brain and a computer, allowing information to be transferred and translated from or even back to the brain.
In this episode of A Grey Matter, Clarissa discusses:
The rapidly emerging field of biomedical engineering (BME)
Neuroengineering and where Brain Computer Interfaces sit within this
Whether popular media influences neuroengineering technologies

Celia started her career as an agronomist, graduating from the University of Queensland in 1983. She has 30 years of development experience, commencing in 1993 with the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID, now DFAT), where she worked primarily on the Africa program. In 2001 she joined Palladium, managing a wide range of development programs in Asia-Pacific and Africa on behalf of the Australian government and other donors. In late 2003, with the support of Palladium, Celia jointly established the Kyeema Foundation and was the CEO from 2003 until her retirement in 2022.
Celia Grenning has played a transformative role at Kyeema, where she served as CEO for nearly two decades. Her leadership saw the organisation grow from a small NGO focused on Newcastle disease control in village chickens in southern Africa to a global force supporting the health and prosperity of marginalised communities in 15 countries. Through her vision and dedication, Kyeema expanded its impact, addressing not only animal health but also the broader environmental and social challenges faced by vulnerable populations.
Although she has stepped down from her role as CEO, Celia continues to contribute her expertise as Kyeema’s financial manager and remains actively involved in the organisation’s nature-based solutions project in the Pacific. Her enduring commitment ensures that Kyeema's work in supporting communities and their environments continues to thrive.
