International Toast: Rotary Club of New York
Meeting Chair Phil Gresham took a moment to raise a glass in appreciation of the Rotary Club of New York. He fondly recalled the club's swift and generous gesture of sending a large heart-shaped box of chocolates via FedEx to Australia, just days after he won the chocolates during his visit to the New York club. This thoughtful act has earned a special place in Phil's heart, symbolising the strong bonds and camaraderie shared among Rotary members worldwide.

Life Time Achievement Awards:
Bruce McNaught & Dymphna Muir

Last week, Past President Dan Alder had the honor of presenting our Rotary Lifetime Achievement Awards to two exceptionally deserving members: Vice President Bruce McNaught and esteemed member Dymphna Muir.

Dan's presentation was, as always, both complimentary and fitting, highlighting the remarkable contributions of Bruce and Dymphna to our Rotary community. It's worth noting that Dan himself established these prestigious awards in 2020, and his adeptness in recognising and honoring the dedication of our members shines through each ceremony.

Congratulations to Bruce and Dymphna for their outstanding service and commitment to the ideals of Rotary. Their achievements inspire us all to continue making a positive impact in our community and beyond.

L-R President Angela Murphy, VP Bruce McNaught, PP Dan Adler

Bruce McNaught is a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Brisbane and holds several significant positions within Rotary District 9620. He is currently serving as the Area Governor for the Brisbane area and is also the District Polio Chair. As a polio survivor himself, Bruce has a personal and profound commitment to the cause of polio eradication and has shared his inspiring story of overcoming the disease, turning a tragic experience into a message of hope and determination.

In addition to his role as Area Governor, Bruce has previously held various leadership positions within the Rotary organisation, including being a past president of two clubs and a Paul Harris Fellow. His involvement with Rotary has also seen him actively participate in numerous fundraising and awareness campaigns, particularly related to the End Polio Now initiative.

Bruce's dedication to Rotary and his impactful work in the fight against polio highlight his significant contributions to both the local and global communities through his Rotary service.

L-R President Angela Murphy, Dymphna Muir, PP Dan Adler

Dymphna Muir is an active member of the Rotary Club of Brisbane and a committed philanthropist. She was inducted into the club in October 2018 and has been a familiar face at Rotary events for years, often participating alongside her husband, Chris Muir, who is also a Rotarian.

In addition to her Rotary involvement, Dymphna and her husband established the Alex Muir Learning Potential Fund Scholarship at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in memory of their son, Alex. This scholarship aims to support financially disadvantaged students pursuing engineering degrees, helping them reach their educational and professional potential.

Dymphna's contributions to the community, both through her work with Rotary and her support for education, highlight her dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of others.

Speaker: Professor Alistair Blanchard
Paul Eliadis Chair of Classics and Ancient History, Director RD Milns Antiquities Museum
We have such INTERESTING members, and Prof. Alastair did not disappoint with a fascinating and humorous look at the ancient Olympics and how it differs from the modern, including the delightful story of Stamata Revithi. She was a Greek woman who, in 1896, was not allowed to compete in the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens. Despite being denied entry, Revithi ran the marathon course the day after the official race (in 5 hours or so), becoming a symbol of determination and perseverance in the face of exclusion. Her story highlights the barriers women faced in sports during that era and remains an inspirational tale of defiance and commitment to athleticism.
Quite.
(Paul Eliadis is also a member of the Rotary Club of Brisbane - more on that in a later bulletin).

Ultrasound and antibodies for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease

The potentially powerful combination of ultrasound and antibodies for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease is the focus of a News & Views article by UQ’s Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) researchers.

QBI Professor Jürgen Götz and his team aim to develop low-intensity ultrasound into a treatment modality for Alzheimer’s disease.

Ultrasound can be used with microbubbles to achieve blood-brain barrier opening for drug delivery, or it can be used without bubbles to modulate brain function.
