It's all about the 2025 District 9620 Conference - President's Letter
Hello lovelies,
Last weekendâs District 9620 Conference was an enriching and beautifully run event, and I left feeling both proud of what our club contributed and inspired by what we experienced. Photos here!
The speaker program was great. Our own Honorary Member PDG Tim Keeler gave an outstanding talk on the QBI Breakthrough Projectâmore on that later.
As always, these events open your eyes to how much Rotary is happening outside your own club. In the House of Friendship, I discovered several causes and contacts that will be ideal for our EarlyAct Club to explore and potentially support. Itâs a good reminder that the conference isnât just about fellowshipâitâs about finding ways to amplify impact, share ideas and get things done.
And of course, the Gatsby Gala was a beautiful celebrationâelegant, joyful, and unanimous in its success thanks to the decision to skip speeches (amongst other things!).
One of the highlights for me was the Kids & Carers Room, which our club proudly hosted. This quiet space made it possible for Rotarians with young children or caring responsibilities to attend the conference in comfort. It was a visible expression of Rotaryâs values of inclusion and service. Our honoured guest, RIPPR PDG Trichur (Raju) Subramanian, was genuinely impressed by itâthough also quite surprised to learn that no such facility had been organised for the upcoming 2024 International Convention. It reminded me that sometimes it's the small, thoughtful things that speak volumes about our values.
We were also proud to present Raju with a copy of our club's 1923â2023 History Booklet, which he received with warm interest.
Looking ahead, please do consider early bird registration for next yearâs conference: https://conference.rotary-3d.org/ Itâs particularly meaningful because our own Mark Williams will be District Governor in 2026. Full support from our club would not only be ideal.
Lastly, a reminder that new members are eligible for a $300 grant to help cover conference expenses. Itâs a great way to experience Rotary beyond the weekly meetingâand I hope more of you will join us next year.
When President Angela had to pull out last minute, the club stepped in and kept things running smoothly. Ten people came to the lunchtime meeting, including guests we've been trying to connect with for ages - Madonna and Johnâboth said theyâd like to come again. Also attending were Matt Christopher, visiting Rotarian Chuck from RC e-Club Wash, Bruce McNaught, Michael Stephens, Peterson Wei, Phil Gresham, Keith Watts, and more!
Vice President Bruce McNaught said it was a rewarding conversation about the work Rotary does, especially in our own club. The flexibility of the meetingâand how those present contributedâwas a good reminder of what Rotary is all about.
Keith Watts shared an update from our sister club, the Rotary Club of Kobe East. Matt Christopher kindly looked after our guests and made sure they felt welcome. Thanks to Bruce, Keith, and Matt for helping make the meeting a success.
Next Meeting â Monday 7 April, 5:30 PM We already have lots of visitors booked inâcome along and help us make it a good one. Register or Decline and more info here.
Our club has been put on the roster to assist with the loading of containers and general housekeeping at Repurposing Equipment - Northern Region on Saturday 5th April 2025 commencing at 8.00am.
Soon be offering Zoom access to our meetings. Weâve been loaned some new smart tech on trial, including multiple microphones and a good quality camera, to help make the experience smoother for everyone.
Keep an eye on the calendar on our website, where the Zoom link will be added soon. If you canât make it in person, youâll still be able to participate and stay connected.
Could you remind your Club team to wear their Club shirts, name badges and Rotary hats/caps (if they have them)? Water bottles would obviously be good as well.
I am hoping that we will be able to get a group photo of all Rotarians attending as well as another with all our friends of Rotary.
See you on Sunday morning.
Regards
David Kearney

April is Rotary Environment Month, and thereâs no better way to honour it than by getting hands-on in our own community. Rotary isnât just about great meetings and good conversation over lunchâwe also roll up our sleeves and get things done. This yearâs D9620 Tree Planting Challenge is the perfect way to do something practical, outdoors, and meaningful with fellow club members and Rotarians from across Brisbane.

At this weekend's district conference, our honorary member PDG Tim Keeler AM delivered a compelling and deeply human presentation on the Rotary Brain Health Initiativeâan evolving partnership between Rotary clubs across Queensland and the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI). Tim, one of the driving forces behind this initiative, spoke with urgency, humour, and compassion about why Rotary is getting serious about brain health.
From Idea to Impact What began as a modest collaboration has now grown to involve 26 Rotary clubs across 20 Queensland communities. Through this network, Rotary raised and delivered its first $100,000 cheque to QBI last yearâan effort led by our club and presented by President Angela alongside Tim. It marked the beginning of a long-term commitment to support ground-breaking research into the brain and its diseases.
Why the Brain? Why Now? Tim asked a question many in the room were thinking: âWhy study the brain?â His answer was simple
Thanks to member Winnie Chen for sharing this thoughtful article from 9News: "Kindness Will Make You Happier Than a Higher Salary, Report Shows."
The article draws on findings from the World Happiness Report and highlights that simple acts of kindnessâhelping a stranger, donating, or volunteeringâcan increase personal happiness even more than earning a higher income.
This message strikes a chord with us as Rotarians. Service above self is at the heart of what we do, and this report reaffirms that giving back is not only good for othersâitâs good for us too. Whether itâs mentoring youth, running fundraisers, or offering time and skills, our work truly brings meaning and wellbeing.
And thereâs moreâsharing a meal with others, something we often do at our meetings, has also been shown to strengthen connection and boost wellbeing. It's another simple act that brings people closer and builds community.
Those who attended the conference had the rare opportunity to hear from Trichur Narayan âRajuâ Subramanian, Rotary International Director (2023â25) and a senior counsel in Indiaâs High Court and Supreme Court.
Raju was a standout presenceânot just for his distinguished rĂŠsumĂŠ, but for how approachable, friendly, and generous he was with his time. He connected easily with attendees, sharing insights from his decades of service in Rotary and the law.
His speech was a highlight. He spoke passionately about The Rotary Foundation, not in abstract terms, but through powerful stories of impactâfrom children receiving free heart surgery through global grants, to students in Rotary-supported schools who went on to become engineers, architects, and accountants. His message was clear: Rotary, when done well, transforms lives.
Professor Sebastian Kaempf opened the session by highlighting the Rotary Peace Fellowship as a platform for professional transformation during a time of global "polycrisis"âinterconnected challenges like climate change, war, and displacement. He praised the programâs grassroots impact, noting Rotaryâs annual funding of 50 fellows and the vital support from local Rotarians in Brisbane and beyond. (Watch the whole segment here)
He then introduced Erica, a fellow from the Philippines.
Erica titled her talk Her Story, reclaiming her narrative shaped by childhood violence, poverty, and resilience. After working through education on scholarships, including Rotaryâs Keystone program, she entered humanitarian work in disaster zones. At 17, she was elected to public office but later left due to corruption, refocusing on peacebuilding and emergency response, especially with displaced Indigenous communities.

Help Rotary support flood victims in western Queensland
Following record-breaking rainfall, western Queensland is being inundated by the worst floods to hit the region in fifty years. Hundreds of residents have been forced to evacuate, thousands of homes are at risk and farmers are losing substantial amounts of stock, significantly impacting their families and livelihoods.
De Camargoâs focus on Innovation, Continuity, and Partnership is particularly relevant to the direction of our club, offering insights into Rotaryâs global priorities and how they connect with our own projects and growth.
This is a great opportunity to reflect on where Rotary is headed and how we can strengthen our clubâs impact.
