At our meeting on Monday, 18 November, we had the pleasure of hearing from Luis Filardi Carneiro, a distinguished professional and Rotarian, who shared his fascinating journey and expertise in sustainability. A Rotary Youth Exchange Program (YEP) alumnus from 1989, Luis reflected on how his Rotary experience helped shape his personal and professional trajectory, reinforcing the profound and lasting impact of Rotary’s student exchange initiatives.

His slide presentation was terrific - read it here.

Luis outlined his impressive career, including his current role with the British Standards Institution (BSI), a global leader in standards, training, and certification. BSI works with clients across industries to implement sustainable and responsible practices, offering expertise in areas such as carbon neutrality, climate change mitigation, and the circular economy. With clients in over 190 countries, BSI plays a critical role in helping organisations align their operations with international standards for sustainability, quality, and safety. A key focus of Luis’s presentation was the concept of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). He explained that ESG represents the framework businesses use to evaluate their environmental impact (such as reducing carbon emissions and promoting biodiversity), social responsibilities (including labour practices and community engagement), and governance structures (ensuring transparency, accountability, and ethical decision-making). He stressed that adopting robust ESG strategies is not only essential for addressing climate change but also for building long-term business resilience and investor confidence.

Luis shared how BSI is at the forefront of assisting organisations in Australia and globally to navigate the complexities of ESG compliance, including meeting mandatory climate disclosures set to take effect in 2025. His emphasis on the importance of sustainability highlighted the urgent need for action and collaboration to ensure a better future.

The session was a reminder of how Rotary fosters meaningful opportunities through initiatives like YEP and how these experiences continue to shape lives and careers decades later. Luis’s insights were both thought-provoking and inspiring, showing how Rotarians and their values can influence global challenges like sustainability.

Thank you to Luis for his engaging presentation and for illustrating the enduring connections and contributions made possible through Rotary.
