August - Membership & New Club Month

Impact starts with our members — people like you who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

At club meetings in communities across the globe, our people of action come together to strengthen their connections to friends and neighbors and their commitment to improving lives.

Who can join?

We’re looking for people who want to give back to their communities.

Rotary clubs also welcome Rotaractors, Rotary Peace Fellows, and other members of the family of Rotary who qualify for membership.

Club Excellence Award (AKA Rotary Citation) 2023-24
Paul Roger
Immediate Past District Governor (2023-24)
District 9620 had the following to say to Immediate Past President Phil Saxby:

Dear Phil

Congratulations!

Your Club has earned the Rotary Citation for 2023-24, the year that you were the Club President. This is considered the most significant award a Rotary club can achieve for its success over a particular year.   The award signifies that your club demonstrated a commitment to achieve their goals, which ultimately helps strengthen Rotary and shape our future. As the 2023-24 District Governor I personally thank you for your own and the entire club’s contribution to the District and Rotary as a whole over the past year.  Keep up the great work.

You will be pleased to also know that only 17 clubs within the District achieved this honour for 2023-24. Something you and all your members should be very proud of.

Please note RI will send 2023-24 club presidents a link to the certificates later this month, but as the 2023-2024 DG I have the pleasure of congratulating you via this email, and I am sure we will acknowledge all 17 clubs who have achieved this honour in the next District News.

Once again, congratulations on a successful year!

Yours in Rotary

Paul

District Governor Sue Mulraney News Letter: July 2024
From the DG:

Welcome to the first District Governor’s Newsletter for 2024-2025, the year where we will SHARE THE MAGIC OF ROTARY.

Our goal is to produce a newsletter that is interesting and visual. However, most importantly, we want to SHARE YOUR MAGIC. Send your stories and projects to be highlighted each month.

Great Start to the Year

John and I have had a fantastic start to the year. We have been welcomed to many changeovers, and the highlight at each meeting has been the Outgoing President’s report of the past year’s activities. The impact of each club is amazing. It has also been wonderful to induct new members into our Rotary family and to acknowledge the great achievements and commitments of the recipients of Paul Harris Fellows.

PNG Landslide Fundraiser: Sunday 11 August
The Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly is hosting a fundraiser for the PNG Landslide recovery efforts. The club has already committed $2000 and aims to substantially increase its donation. The guest speaker will be Gabriel Andandi, a Rotarian and local Papua New Guinean from the affected region, who will share his intimate knowledge of the village and the devastation caused by the landslide and flooding.

The club is partnering with a local business, Cedar and Pine Wine Bar, which has generously offered the venue with no booking fee and will donate $1 per drink. Guests will be able to purchase a special bottle of wine from the 'Wordy wines' selection, with Cedar and Pine donating $5 per bottle purchased. A variety of finger foods will be supplied.

There will also be raffles on offer on the day.

All funds raised will go to RAWCS, a Rotary International affiliated group, which already has contacts ensuring the money goes directly to the victims of this tragic disaster.

Attendees are encouraged to make an afternoon of it and invite friends. The more, the merrier. The Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly looks forward to seeing everyone there.

Podcast: The business of neuroscience

As a Research Fellow in Neuroeconomics, Dr Dragan Rangelov investigates human sensory perception, decision-making and memory. His work explores how the brain processes and stores information that leads us to make decisions in all aspects of life. He does this by using techniques designed to measure and record brain activity, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging and by identifying patterns of neural activity associated with external sensory stimuli.

In this conversation, Dragan delves into various intriguing topics, including:

  • The brain systems responsible for decision-making
  • How neuroeconomics explores economic decision making
  • Game theory and how it provides a platform for neuroeconomic studies
  • Why we choose to purchase one thing over another
  • The idea behind establishing a neuroeconomics research profile at UQ
