Progress Update from Kavieng, Papua New Guinea: Local Leadership in Action

The recent training session in Kavieng, Papua New Guinea, held in July 2024, marks a significant step forward in Kyeema's locally-led program. Under the guidance of Kyeema’s PNG Program Manager, Ali Ume, the initiative is now being fully implemented by local leaders, showcasing the community's commitment to sustainable development.

One of the highlights of the visit was the construction of a second Master Farmer chicken house, built entirely with local resources in anticipation of the training. This achievement reflects the community's proactive approach and readiness to embrace new agricultural practices.

This program, entirely funded by Rotary to date, owes its progress to the support of the Rotary Club of Brisbane and the Rotary Club of Moorestown. Their contributions have been vital in empowering local communities to build sustainable livelihoods.

Subject: Progress update, Kavieng Program

Hi all, just got off the phone to Mr Laiman Beling the Metevoi VC master farmer and Mr John Aini.

Update from VC Master Farmer,
  • The Solar system and the flood lights are working well
  • There are now 5 chickens in the fence, there are also some eggs which are yet to hatch
  • The youth leaders are studying the training resources that were left with them. Their intention is to learn as much as possible so they can start conducting awareness and training in their LLG Ward.
  • The word in the community is that people have started building their chicken houses.
  • The VC master farmer is yet to visit and confirm numbers.

Update from Mr John Aini, Founder of Ailan Awareness Association. Since the VC and Coral Gardening training at Kaselok,
      - He has supplied nails to 4 communities Ungat, Lovongai, Metemaram & Patitab to assist them to build their chicken houses
      - There are 2 Female trainees from Metemeram village who attended the Kaselok program, have now taken the initiative to conduct VC awareness and training in their community.
      - John Visited Metevoi village with a group from National Geography's Prestine Seas to observe the coral nursery setup. The National Geography's Prestine Seas will be filming the nursery on their next trip.
-The group from Duke of Yorks (DOY) Islands, that we delivered VC awareness and Coral Gardening training (including a dry demonstration of Coral Nursery setup). Since returning to DOY they have built a chicken house and will be setting up their coral nursery next week, using the materials that was used for demonstration at Kaselok. (John gave them to the rods and the rope to take with them to DOY)

I think is very promising progress in such short time since the training at Kaselok, I cannot thank Rotary Club of Brisbane enough for such support. The beneficial communities have taken the program and expanded it in the community in such short time.

Thank you John for managing this progress we hope to continue this program with you for few more years.

Thank you
