$100,000 donated by RCoB to Queensland Brain Institute at Queensland University
We were honored to be part of a special tour at UQ's Queensland Brain Institute, joined by Her Excellency, the Honourable Dr. Jeannette Young, and Professor Peter Nimmo RFD, both distinguished Honorary members of the Rotary Club of Brisbane.
The visit celebrated the Rotary Club of Brisbane's initial donation of $100,000 towards the Endowed Chair in Neuroscience at QBI.
During the tour, we had the opportunity to see the remarkable work being done at the Clem Jones Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research (CJCADR), with a special focus on the ultrasound device being developed as a potential treatment for dementia.
We take pride in Professor Nimmo, who also serves as the patron for Queensland's Centenary Project, and his significant interest and support advancing research in neuroscience and dementia.

On 8 July Angela Murphy opened her first meeting as president with 16 in attendance including PP Daniel Vankov, speaker Susan da Silva (President Angela Murphy's mum), returning guest Mike Speter and visiting Rotarian Melanie Liu (Mid City) and her guest George.

New Zealander Susan da Silva commended her local Rotary Club with their Breast Milk Bank initiative:
Pasteurised breast milk is available for Northland’s premature and sick babies thanks to a regional fundraising drive led by local Rotary and Lions clubs.
The human milk bank is housed at Whangārei Hospital after the Rotary Whangārei South and City clubs, Whangārei Lions and community members raised $32,900 for a pasteuriser.
President Jenni Moore said people were happy to donate for such a great cause.
“Through the publicity generated, Whangārei Lions got in touch to add their support of $5000, and Whangārei City Rotary Club also gave us $1000, which was amazing".

Ms da Silva barely got started on the history of the Treaty of Waitangi and her take on the founding document of Aotearoa certainly raised a few questions from the room. Part 2 might be in order at a later date.
Mushrooms have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, and the scientific evidence behind their beneficial properties is now growing after recent discoveries from Professor Frederic Meunier and his team at the UQ Queensland Brain Institute. The team identified and purified a bioactive compound from the lion's mane mushroom, called Hericium erinaceus, which can stimulate the growth of new brain cells and improve memory. Laboratory tests measured the neurotrophic effects of compounds isolated from Hericium erinaceus on cultured brain cells. They found that the active compounds promote neuron projections, extending and connecting to other neurons. Using super-resolution microscopy, the increasing neurons could be visualised. The mushroom extract and its active components largely increase the size of growth cones, which are particularly important for brain cells to sense their environment and establish new connections with other neurons in the brain. This growth improves memory.
In this fascinating episode of a Grey Matter, Professor Meunier discusses:
The groundbreaking discovery and its implications.
The historical and medicinal uses of lion's mane mushroom.
How this compound enhances memory and brain cell growth.
The future potential of this research in brain health.
In the spirit of reconciliation, the Rotary Club of Brisbane acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea, and community.
