I just realised that next week on the 21st of May it will be roughly one month since the Club last met at the Brisbane Club. If you are missing our meetings there do not miss next Monday as the following one will be our anniversary celebration so no regular meeting again. On the 21st we have fellowship on the schedule but it will be a rather busy meeting with four people getting recognised. What for? Please, come to find out!
As mentioned above, on the 28
th of May there won't be a meeting at the Brisbane Club but rather a get-together at the Queen Street Mall Stage at 11:30 for a 12:00 start. We are also testing the new Club website functionality so, please, register for the event at
http://brisbanerotary.org.au/event/95th-anniversary-celebratory-event/. There are no costs associated with taking part in our 95
th anniversary.
Meanwhile, in case anyone ever doubted, Denise "has done it again". The Queensland Police Commissioner, Ian Stewart, made us the honour to personally introduce us to the secrets of Operation Sentinel. He gave a very entertaining and informative talk during our 14th of May luncheon at the United Services Club. Over 90 Rotarians and guests, including Senator Amanda Stoker and several other prominent guests with who I am still negotiating the fee, found fascinating facts and learned from the source why the Commonwealth Games 2018 went so smoothly. The event was duly organised with military precision by our very own Denise Schellbach and we look towards establishing it as an annual one for the Club. Thank you, Denise, for the persistence!
My personal take-away from the event was "Be careful when playing with drones!" I am happy to share more on the topic but only in personal conversations. The other positive thing is that I have a proof beyond any doubt that there is a third person reading my Bulletin message. I was sure about Mark because he compiles the Bulletin. I was pretty certain about myself because I have to write it. Unfortunately there is still no software to generate it but it will come. I am pretty sure about that, too. At one "lucky" moment we will have software to write the messages, another one to read them and we will happily be doing nothing in our ignorance. Ah, I started dreaming again. Anyway, now I am sure that it is not only the two of us. Thank you THIRD PERSON! Yes, it is YOU! Well, that is my third take-away from the Commissioner's visit. One has to try really hard to embed humour no matter how successful he is in achieving that in general. Please, let me know next time we meet in person if my attempt worked!
Meanwhile the 14th of May was a deadline for awards submissions to the District. I almost missed it as apparently there is an unsolvable problem with the e-mail broadcasting on behalf of the District or the e-mail receiving on behalf of the Club. In any case the result is that a lot of the communication simply does not happen. Our Assistant Governor, Lisa Bateson, however is working hard to fill-in the gap. Thank you, Lisa! As a result of Lisa's efforts and to a great extent because I won't be able to repeat Graeme's last year success in getting both the Membership Retention Trophy and the Errol Richardson Membership Development Trophy I made submissions on behalf of the Club for the:
- Herrington Shield for The Best Bulletin,
- Heather Kinross Memorial Trophy for International Service,
- Alan Ward Memorial Shield for Vocational Service, and
- Carolyn Krueger Bright Spark Award for Best Public Relations Initiative.
Fingers crossed! ... And remember that you can still place your bids at the James Delahunty's online auction until the 24th of May:
