Val Marlow - Royal Flying Doctor Service

The RFDS is now in its 91st year of operations and began as a dream of one man to bring a "mantle of safety" to people living in the outback.  Today it is a major medical operation available to all who require the use of the Service and in Queensland no one is more than 2 hours from medical care.

I began as a volunteer with the Service in late 1986, just as the youngest of my three daughters was finishing high school.  I was looking for something to fill in the gap left by not having to do all the school and extra activities associated with bringing up daughters.  There was an article in the newspaper asking for volunteers for the RFDS so I rang and have been with the Brisbane Auxiliary ever since.  I have been president for a number of years now and over the last couple of years have been filling in at talks for the time-pressed staff at the office.  Just recently, I have also assisted the Base Manager at the Brisbane base in conducting tours over that facility.  I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment.
